An underwater paradise on the east coast
Nilaveli Beach, located near Trincomalee on the east coast of Sri Lanka, is one of the country’s true gems for anyone who loves the ocean. With long stretches of soft white sand and calm, turquoise water, this area offers some of the best conditions in Sri Lanka for both snorkelling and diving. (season June to Spetember)
This is one of those places where you quickly end up spending more time in the water than on land 💙
We visit Nilaveli every summer. In the beginning of June we where there for a week, and during this time, my daughter, S, completed her Junior Open Water diving certification. It was such a special experience to be part of her journey and watch her confidence grow with every dive 🤿✨

Where is Nilaveli? 📍
Nilaveli is situated about 15–20 minutes north of Trincomalee, a relaxed coastal town on Sri Lanka’s east coast. It feels much less developed and more laid-back compared to many of the southern beach destinations, which is exactly part of its charm.
The area includes both Nilaveli Beach and nearby Uppuveli Beach, as well as access to one of Sri Lanka’s most famous marine parks – Pigeon Island.
How to get there 🚗✈️
From Bandaranaike International Airport (Colombo), the drive to Nilaveli takes approximately 6–7 hours, depending on traffic and stops along the way.
Because of the distance, Nilaveli is often included as part of a round trip itinerary rather than a standalone beach stay, usually combined with cultural highlights in the Cultural Triangle or the central highlands.Best time to visit Nilaveli 🌞

Nilaveli is at its best from May to September, when the east coast experiences its dry season.
During these months:
- The sea is calm
- Visibility underwater is excellent
- Conditions for snorkelling and diving are ideal
- Rainfall is minimal compared to the west and south coast

Snorkelling in Nilaveli 🐢
One of the absolute highlights here is snorkelling at Pigeon Island National Park, just a short boat ride from Nilaveli Beach.
Here you can often see:
- Sea turtles 🐢
- Reef sharks (completely harmless!)
- Colourful coral reefs
- Schools of tropical fish in crystal-clear water
Even if you are a beginner, this is an incredibly rewarding experience. The water is shallow in many areas, and conditions are usually calm during the season.
Diving in Nilaveli 🤿
For certified divers, or those who want to learn, Nilaveli offers beautiful dive sites with reefs, marine life, and excellent visibility during the summer months. It’s also a fantastic place to do your Open Water course, as conditions are generally easier and more predictable than on the west or south coast during this season.
One of the best things about diving here is the simplicity: calm mornings, warm water, and very little boat traffic compared to more crowded dive destinations.
More than just diving 🌴
When you’re not in the water, Nilaveli is all about slowing down.
Think:
- Long walks on empty beaches
- Quiet sunsets over the ocean
- Small local restaurants by the shore
- A peaceful, relaxed atmosphere far from busy tourist hubs
