A Complete Guide for Tourists about tipping in sri Lanka
The most frequent questiong we get: Is tipping common in Sri Lanka?
The short answer: yes!
Many travellers wonder when, where, and how much to tip in a new country. In Sri Lanka, tipping is part of the culture. While it’s not mandatory, it is generally expected in most service jobs. This guide will explain everything you need to know about tipping—from restaurants and hotels to drivers, guides, and even diving instructors.
Do You Need to Tip in Sri Lanka?
Yes. Tipping is widely practised, and wages in the service industry are generally low. Tips are an important part of income for many people.
That said, you should never feel forced to tip if the service is poor. The easiest way to show dissatisfaction is simply by not tipping.
How Much Should You Tip in Sri Lanka?
There’s no fixed rule, but these practical guidelines are what locals in the service industry recommend:
🍴 Restaurants; The standard is a 10% tip (in most places already added to your bill) + round up to the nearest 100/1,000 rupees. Extra generous tips are always warmly welcomed.
🏨 Hotels: At our own At Ease Beach Hotel, we keep it simple: there’s a tip box at reception, so guests can leave an amount upon checkout. The money is then shared fairly among all staff.
Common at arger hotels; Give a small tip (100–200 LKR) to porters carrying luggage, and leave something for housekeeping when you checkout.
🤿 Diving & Surfing Instructors: 1,000 LKR upwards for your instructor is a ok tip.
🛺 Tuk-Tuk & Taxi Drivers: For metered taxis (only common in Colombo), just round up the fare. In Hikkaduwa: agree on a price, and stick to that. For longer car transfers, a tip of around **10%** is appreciated
🏯 Local Guides: At attractions like Sigiriya and Dambulla Cave Temple, the guides usually set a fixed price. For example, a guided Sigiriya climb costs around 2,000 LKR per guide. (PS: this tip is included in most of our round tours, our driver pays all the local guides, so you don’t have to. If you’re happy with the service, adding 500–1,000 LKR as a bonus is a nice gesture.
How much should I tip my driver after a round toour?
When you travel on a private round tour with us at 🚐 At Ease – Tours & Transport, things are simple:
The driver receives a good fixed salary from us. Still, many guests want to give something extra as a thank-you at the end of the tour.
👉 A guideline: 10 USD / 3,000 LKR per day of the tour is considered a good bonus. For example a 7 days tour = 70 USD tip in bonus
Some give more, some less, and some nothing at all – all of which is perfectly fine.
NB! Not all Tour Operator Companies pay their drivers a good salary. There ar many examples of drivers who live only of the tip. If that is the case, you should tip 10% of the value of your transport / trip.
